The American Red Cross was founded on May 21 1881 by Clara Barton, in the aftermath of the Civil War. The organization provides volunteer disaster relief all over the world. Washington D.C. has several Red Cross buildings, including its headquarters near the White House - listed as a National Historic Landmark. In the picture, pedestrians walk next to the Red Cross Administrative Headquarters in Foggy Bottom, passing the homeless camped in the median strips of the District.

About the artist:

Carlos Carmonamedina studied Fine Arts in Mexico and Romania. His artwork, which combines his love for travel, bicycles, food, old cameras and comics has been featured in many exhibitions around the world.

After living in Europe for 7 years, he is now settled in Washington DC, where he works as an illustrator and graphic designer.
